Being Pagan and Vegan

Well not really thought about it, but this week I've officially been Vegan 2 months! 6 in total if I count from February where I was 90% vegan up to going full 2 months a go! Do I feel better for it? Absolutely! In mind, body and spirit!!

For me being vegetarian and then vegan is part of my pagan path. When i had a brief spell of eating meat (it was for family reasons and not for myself) again I stopped being pagan. I felt as if I was failing my path as a pagan  and witch. I didn't feel I could live as a pagan when i was doing something against my own beliefs.

When i started back on the path of paganism the one thing I had to return to was vegetarianism and animal rights. Becoming vegan was from educating myself further.

But of course that is just me. I am not saying you are not a true pagan if you are not  vegan.  We all walk our own path in our own way. I guess for me it was because I was already vegetarian when I realised I was pagan and so for me they are a part of each other.

Is there anyone else that has something in their life they feel is part of being pagan when normally on its own it isnt?

New Tools: Cleansing And Consecrating

And when we say 'New' we don't just mean brand new, but new to you!

It's very wise to cleanse and consecrate any new tools etc you have bought for your craft, be it a wand or a simple knife. We cleanse our tools to remove any unwanted energies and consecrate them to make them ours.

Before consecrating you should first cleanse your  tools. You can simply use sage smoke or moonlight. Some have even used sunlight to cleanse. Others may lay there tools on the Earth or sprinkle with well or spring water. You can also use sound. It needs to be a pure and clean sound such as tingsha bells.

I will often cleanse my tools after I have been doing any spellwork that may have left a negative aftertaste, so to speak, such as maybe banishing work or if you have been doing some major healing doe a serious illness.  And if I feel it is needed I will re consecrate my tools too.

As I said earlier when you gain any new tools etc, you should cleanse and then consecrate them. Here is a good site on consecrating your tools. And even if you have made the tools yourself, consecrating them ties them to you even more!

"Your sensitivity is the sacred gateway to your intuition. It's that special, receptive radar that picks up energy and signals. In fact, your sensitivity is one of your greatest assets, and the key to your survival. The more you connect with it, the more miracles and synchronicities you'll attract."

'Your Purpose is Joy...'

"Your purpose has nothing to do with how you make a living.  That is your vocation,  mission,  or inspired passion - all worthy - but your purpose is much simpler and bigger.  Your purpose is joy. It's about discovering,  nurturing,  and celebrating who you truly are, and knowing and loving yourself at the deepest level. "

My Birthday Altar and Wishes Spell

Today is Valentines Day. But not only that. It's my birthday. and this year i decided to do something that I have never done before. I created a special birthday altar.

As I'd never done one before I had a look around on Google to see what others had done and I found almost nothing except one a mother did for her 5 year olds birthday. So in the end I just used my experience.

My Birthday Altar

The birthday altar will probably be one of your most personal as this altar literally reflects you. Or it should do. After all, this is YOUR day. So firstly I looked at the month I was born. For me violet is the key word in colour, flowers and incense and in crystals Amethyst. And it's also Valentines Day. So I started with:

  • A cloth that was violet in colour
  • An Amethyst crystal
  • And for my incense I chose Lavender. It's the closest in colour to violet. But for my it's a favourite flower and scent. Remember this is a personal altar
  • A picture of Brighid as my birthday falls in the month of Imbolc
  • A tarot card The Star as is this represents my birth sign Aquarius The Water Barer
  • Hearts scattered on my altar and hanging on the wall for Valentines Day
  • A lavender candle
  • And of course it's my birthday, so a small cake with a candle (for the spell)
After those choices everything is literally personal to me. So this is also what is on my altar.

  • A picture of myself as a baby with my Grandad Newton
  • A picture of myself with myself. I used this picture because I have a camera in my hand and like Doctor Who, it has been with me all my life, photography not that camera lol I am a creative individual and photography is just one outlet for that creativity. The younger me in the picture is 5 years old
  • I wanted flowers on my altar, so I chose yellow tulips. Again a personal favourite.
  • A green cloth and a single green ribbon because I love green
  • The is a small Buddha, because it was because of Buddhism I found the path to Paganism
  • A TARDIS because Doctor Who has been with me all my life and I am still a fan
  • A Torchwood ID card with Captain Jack Harkness, This represents two things. I became a fan of Torchwood via Doctor Who and it was because of John Barrowman aka Captain Jack, that I stepped out of the closet.
  • A Rainbow googly eyed thing (I have yet yo identify) it's something I was given at the last Gay Pride I attended last year. Because I am gay
So that's my very personal altar. I set it up last night and when I sat and looked I confess to shedding a tear because this was part of who I am. Not all of me, but a part and it's very emotional I think when you see it like that. Especially when it's yourself that has done this.

So remember, when you do your birthday altar it's YOU that you should see there. Some of the things that mirrors the person you see yourself as.

Of course this wouldn't be a birthday altar with out a birthday wish spell!

Birthday Wish Spell

Firstly, i don't claim this spell as my own. I liked it because it's a lovely and in truth, a very old spell as we have been doing this for a very long time. So nobody can claim it as their own on the internet.

So now, nobody wants to be doing too much on their birthday. You want to relax and chill out with those you love, and this lovely and simple spell reflects that. This is all about the wish. now you could do this when you have your party. But for me this was personal moment. So I chose to have a small cake in my room. And an extra one for my party :P

For this spell all you need is:

  • A candle. This doesn't need to be a big candle. One you would have on your cake is ideal. This technically should be a colour that represents you, such as your birth colour. In my case that's violet. But it's not always possible. So I chose a white one and has another candle that was the right colour on my altar (to tell the truth I wanted a candle on my cake :) )
  • A cake. Well of course! It's your birthday! Mine is a red velvet cake. again reflecting the Valentines Day theme.
As I said, this is all about the wish. So light your candles. I lit all mine on the altar, as well as the one on my cake.

Close your eyes and think about your wish. When you have it, say the following and then blow out the candle.

"A year has come,
A years has passed,
I'll make my birthday wish at last,
Magic powers old and new,
Make my birthday wish come true!"

Blow out your candle!

I then added:

"I cast this spell with harm to non,
so mote it be my spell is done!"

And there we are. One simple spell, that is as old as the hills themselves! Enjoy your birthday! And now I shall join my family and await my sister Raven Moon and her hubby to arrive!

A New Venture

As we approach the middle of January we get ever closer to Imbolc on 1st February. We are already seeing the signs of a fresh start in nature through the first signs of buds on trees and the delicate leaves of daffodils, crocuses,  snowdrops and bluebells.

But it's not just nature that is waking up or making a fresh start.  Many of us in the Pagan community are and I am no exception.

Towards the end of the year my sister, Raven Moon,  invited me to join her in a new venture. A new witchcraft and pagan store that sells hand crafted, hand decorated items done by myself and Raven Moon and also by another part of this tiny coven, Litha SilverMoon.

What are we called? Besom Magic. You can find us on both twitter and Facebook.  And this past few days this little Techy Witch has been busy setting up the website.

I will  share more as we get closer to opening.

But for now. ..

New Beginnings

Change can be a scary time, especially when that change is huge. I myself have gone through a massive change this past year. One that was both scary and a breath of fresh air.

Before this great change I found myself in a kind of pagan/witchy quagmire.  Although I knew I was pagan through and through,  I had somehow lost my spiritual drive. I had fallen into a rut.

This huge change in my life involved a great deal of pressing the re-start button including this part of my life and because of this re-start it has re kindled my dying flame that is my spiritual side as well as my witchy side.

And even more change is in motion as I type as I join a tiny coven that has re-kindled a light within all those who are apart of it.

So yes change can very often be incredibly frightening.  But more often than not,  it is for the best and can re awaken the dying embers within you!

Pagans celebrate Halloween as part of the country’s newest religion

By Robert Pigott
BBC News religious affairs correspondent

In a riverside meadow in the Dorset town of Weymouth, a witch is using a broom to sweep a sacred circle in the grass.

The rest of the coven stand, some in hooded gowns, in a circle around an iron cauldron where a fire is burning.

They've met to celebrate Samhain, pronounced "sah-wen": the turning of the year from light into dark.

Many think of Halloween as a time of ghouls and ghosts, and for some retailers it has become the third most lucrative event of the year.

It is the time of year when some churches remember the souls of the departed.

For the witches of Weymouth it is one of their most important religious festivals, a time when they believe the barriers between the physical and spiritual worlds are at their thinnest.

They invite the spirits of north, south, east and west into the circle, and cut apples to share with the spirits of people who have died.

The leader of the coven, Diane Narraway, bids farewell to the goddess of light, and kneels before the head of a horned ram, holding her hands out as if to a flame.

"I kneel before... the horned god, Lord of Witchdom, as we welcome him back to reign over the dark months," she says.

The coven meets regularly to make spells, using a variety of potions and differently coloured candles in order to achieve particular ends.

Green is for money, pink is for love

They say the spells are exclusively positive, and should be seen more as prayers.

Anouska Ireland, a 35-year-old teaching assistant, is wearing a hooded cloak in pale blue - the colour of good health.

She says: "We sometimes use the cauldron to mix spells... it could be for the purpose of healing, and in harnessing positive intentions for someone who is unwell."

Sarah Sanford, a mother-of-three, uses spells to protect them.

"When my children are going to school I'll do a protection spell for them, so they get through the day all right," she says.......

Families banished over witchcraft

Wednesday, 7th October, 2009

Angry residents attacked two families in Mubende and Mityana district after accusing them of practicing witchcraft. A mob almost lynched the family of Yozefu Walakira on Sunday night at Bulyamagunju village in Myanzi sub-county.

A day earlier, in a separate incident, Betty Nakyobe was chased from Kityokya centre in Bulera sub-county. In the Sunday incident, Walakira’s property was destroyed, but security operatives came in time to rescue the family.

The sub-county internal security officer, Godfrey Kabiito, confirmed the attack. “Some goats, pigs and chicken were killed. The banana and coffee plantations were cut down and Walakira was assaulted,” he said.

The mob accused Walakira’s wife, Deziranta Namatovu, of terrorising the village with witchcraft, he explained.

“One of the complainants is Simon Bugembe, his neighbour, who claims that Namatovu bewitched her daughter.” The Police said the hunt for the perpetrators was still going on.

In the other incident, Nakyobe was chased from the trading centre after she was seen digging up the graveyard of George Nsamba resident.

“They arrested her and took her to the Police. The Police called the owner of the graveyard and Nakyobe agreed to repair the graves,” said Jane Namukasa, the defence secretary.

“When she was released to implement the agreement, the residents held a meeting and resolved to send her away from the village.”

Another area leader, Emma Sakos, said the residents attacked Nakyobe on Saturday morning before she left her house and ordered her to leave the village.

“The LC officials and the Police intervened and she was not assaulted. She immediately left the village. The property which she left behind was burnt,” Sakos said.

The acting district Police commander, Nathan Matovu, said the case was being investigated.
